BNP by-election round up

On the 14th June, the BNP contested two by-elections in Yorkshire & the Humber. Both of these had been postponed from their original 3rd May dates due to the death of other party's candidates.

Calderdale: Warley
Although this is the BNP's weakest seat on Calderdale council, they still managed to poll just under 12% of the vote and finish fourth ahead of Labour. Their vote was down 3.4% since May 2006 and they have no prospect of winning here as the Liberal Democrats hold just under 50% of the vote.

North Lincolnshire: Brigg & Wolds
This was an all-up election for three seats. The BNP stood two candidates, who finished 8th and 9th out of 9. Their share of the vote was 4.3%. Having done well in this council on 3rd May, the BNP decided to add their nominations to this seat following its postponement. Although they failed to make an impact on this ward, they still pose a threat in other parts of the borough.

On the 12th July, the BNP stood for a vacancy on Rotherham council.

Rotherham: Valley
With a very low turnout of 19%, the BNP advanced their vote by a couple of percent from May and came second with nearly a fifth of the vote. They are still 433 votes behind Labour. This year's BNP votes in the borough show that there is an increasing threat as they strive to win their first seat in South Yorkshire.

There are no future by-elections scheduled in Yorkshire & the Humber at the time of writing, but we will be remain vigilant. If you know of any by-elections in your locality, please email us at info@yhuaf.org.uk.
