What is Unite Against Fascism?
Unite Against Fascism is a national campaign with the aim of alerting British society to the rising threat of the extreme right gaining an electoral foothold in this country, in particular the British National Party (BNP).
Until recently this country had not seen the kind of rise of the extreme right that has blighted many countries elsewhere in Europe. However, in the 2006 local elections the BNP won 33 council seats bringing its total to 48 nationally. They polled over 220,000 votes in the 350 wards contested. In the 2005 general elections the BNP kept their deposit in 34 constituencies and polled over 10% of the vote in Barking, Dewsbury and Burnley. In 2004's European elections they received over 800,000 votes across the country. In Yorkshire & the Humber they received 8% of vote; almost enough to elect an MEP to the European Parliament.
On Thursday, 3rd May 2007 there will local elections across most of the country. The BNP will be seeking to extend its influence and support base by winning seats on local councils as it has already done in Burnley, Bradford, Stoke, Sandwell, Epping Forest and Barking & Dagenham.
The BNP can be defeated. The majority of people in this country abhor the BNP. If everyone votes we can stop the BNP. Our campaign will urge people to use their vote to stop the BNP.
