Come to the national 2012 Unite Against Fascism conference

Unite to isolate and defeat the BNP and EDL

Please register for the Unite Against Fascism conference

The Unite Against Fascism 2012 conference on 25 February is a chance for antifascists and antiracists to plan our campaign for the coming year.

Antifascists have staged successful mobilisations against the English Defence League around the country and this year also saw a successful campaign to boot the fascist British National Party out of Stoke-on-Trent and other key areas at the local elections.

But the threat of the EDL – now turning its violence against trade unionists and the left as well as Muslims – has not gone away. And now it has teamed up with BNP splinter group the British Freedom Party, creating a new alliance with both an electoral wing and a street thug movement – the classic two-pronged fascist strategy.

Hundreds of antifascist and antiracist activists, campaigners and trade unionists will come together at the conference to discuss our strategy for 2012.

Unsubstantiated allegations of cultural links to sexual abuse whip up Islamophobia

Article by Sabby Dhalu, Secretary, One Society Many Cultures

In the wake of recent convictions for sexual grooming and rape in Derby three myths have been fostered by sections of the media and some politicians.

Firstly, that young Muslim men have a tendency to be paedophiles, sexual groomers and rapists due to their cultural background; secondly, that citing ethnicity as a causal factor for sex crimes stops racism, and finally, that there has been a ‘conspiracy of silence ‘on the issue of grooming by Pakistani heritage men, which some politicians and newspapers are now bravely trying to break.

These myths must be exposed and challenged. They do nothing to protect the victims of sexual violence; they only serve to give legitimacy to racist views and organisations.

Unite to defeat the BNP in the 2010 elections

The key priorities for the anti fascist movement

The election of the two BNP candidates in the June elections to the European Parliament was the first national election success for fascists in British history, and provided a major boost for the BNP’s attempt to be seen as a legitimate political party.

The BNP cannot be appeased. If we are to succeed in isolating and defeating it we have to build a united, mass anti-fascist movement which confronts head on the racism and Islamophobia that has fuelled its growth. That means consistently exposing the racist lies put out by the BNP whether they be about council house allocation, crime or whatever.

BNP defeated by big increase in the anti-fascist vote

A report on the Athersley, St Helen's by election in Barnsley held on October 15th

The decisive factor in the BNP's defeat was the big increase in turnout from 2008 to 2009. This ensured that the BNP were soundly defeated, even though their vote fell by only 45. With turnout boosted by nearly 450, the anti-BNP vote coalesced around the party best placed to defeat them. Consequently, the victors increased their majority over the BNP from 330 to 930.

Unite to defeat the fascist BNP

Article by John Campbell, Chair of Yorkshire & Humber Unite Against Fascism

The election of two fascist MEPs is the biggest electoral breakthrough in the history of British fascism.

The 2009 election result is the latest example of a relentless rise in the BNP’s vote. In the 1999 European elections the BNP won 100 000 votes. In 2004 they won over 800 000 votes. This year it won nearly 1 million.

This advance by the BNP will boost its attempt to establish itself as legitimate, national party like similar parties across Europe. During and following the election the process of normalisation of a fascist party has increased.
